A New Years Day wedding? You must be mad, it will either chuck it down with rain, be absolutely freezing or be in a raging blizzard. Not so, the temperature was a very reasonable 9 degrees, the rain held off and of course there was no blizzard, in fact a pretty good New Years Day. Amy Murphy had chosen well for her marriage to Mark Watkinson.
As usual we turned up at the house early to relieve the worry about the car, our really splendid 1930 Essex Super Six. The first thing to be done was a quick dust over to ensure ‘Esther’ was looking her best then into the house to help with whatever was needed. Fortunately everything was going to plan with the lovely bridesmaids and page boy nearly ready and Amy only needing to put on her stunning dress (no photos allowed!!). Helped putting on the buttonholes for Amy’s dad Mick and her brother as well as the corsage for Sue, Amy’s mother.
Three trips to the church was the order of the day as house and church were only four minutes apart. The first two trips were with the bridesmaids, page boy and mother then finally with Amy and Mick. We arrived at the church just two minutes early, helped Amy by carrying the back of the gorgeous dress to the door of Saint Mary’s Church – dirt on the dress is a definite no no. Went to try and find a pub for a sandwich but both pubs in Old Basing were closed and the local general store was also closed so ended up quietly starving.
Wedding over it was time to help the photographer Nick to quickly organise the photos as the temperature had dropped quite dramatically and there was the smell of rain in the air. Photos completed it was off to the reception at Audleys Wood, a lovely four star hotel just outside Basingstoke. Final photos there, a quick half a glass of mulled wine, kiss the bride, shake the hand of the groom and it was off home. A very satisfying and enjoyable New Years Day.
